"Never Gonna Give You Up" is the debut unmarried recorded past English singer and songwriter Rick Astley, released on 27 July 1987. It is one of Astley's well-nigh famous songs. It was written and produced by Stock Aitken Waterman, and was released every bit the showtime single from Astley'southward debut album, Whenever You Need Somebody (1987). "Never Gonna Requite You Upwards" was recorded at PWL Studios in Southward London, England. The song'south basslines were produced using a Yamaha DX7 digital synthesizer, while a Linn 9000 was used for the drums and sequencing. Other equipment used included a Roland Juno 106 analog synthesizer, and Yamaha Rev5 and Rev7 reverberators.[nine]

Mike Stock stated that the Colonel Abrams hit "Trapped" (1985) was a big influence on "Never Gonna Requite You Up", maxim: "For Rick Astley'due south song I didn't want it to audio like Kylie or Bananarama so I looked at the Colonel Abrams rail 'Trapped' and recreated that syncopated bassline in a mode that suited our song."[ten]

The title and concept for the song were suggested by Pete Waterman after Astley spoke to him of his devotion to his then girlfriend, with the song'south tune, chords and lyrics then composed by Mike Stock and Matt Aitken.[11] Initial mixing was done by Phil Harding, with the song'due south distinctive constructed string and brass lines later added by Fairlight operator Ian Curnow.[11] The final mix was provided by PWL remixer Pete Hammond, who made the vocals more prominent. His completed extended mix was edited downwardly by Stock and Aitken to become the radio version.[eleven]

Music video

The 2022 music video for "Never Gonna Give You Up" was directed by Simon W. Rickrolling

"Never Gonna Give You Up" is the bailiwick of an Internet meme known as "rickrolling" involving misleading links (normally shortened URLs) redirecting to the song's music video.[19] Originally started by users on 4chan, by May 2007, the practice had achieved notoriety on the Internet, and it increased in popularity after its use equally a 2008 Apr Fools' Day joke by diverse media companies and websites—including YouTube, which rickrolled all of its featured videos on that twenty-four hours—allowing people to easily rickroll their friends' devices.[xx] "I recollect it's but one of those odd things where something gets picked up and people run with it", Astley told the Los Angeles Times in belatedly March 2008, adding: "That's what's brilliant nigh the Cyberspace."[21]

Astley as well appeared in the 2008 Macy'due south Thanksgiving Day Parade, interrupting a song performed by those on a float promoting the Cartoon Network plan Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends with a lipsynched functioning of "Never Gonna Give You lot Up".

The Emmy Award-winning sitcom Ted Lasso featured the song prominently in the season ii episode "No Weddings and a Funeral", including a scene where Rebecca Welton (played by Hannah Waddingham) begins to sing it in the heart of her begetter'south funeral. Astley himself commented of the episode, "Waddingham...did an amazing, incredible job. It was so emotional, and then moving, so incredible. People accept said they even cried (during) the church scene."[30]

  • In 1997, French boy band 2Be3 covered the vocal under the proper noun "Toujours là pour toi", which peaked at No. four in France and No. 12 in Belgium (Wallonia).[84]
  • A grouping of London dance producers called the Rickrollerz made a business firm music cover version of "Never Gonna Give You Upward".[85] In May 2008, the track entered the UK Society Charts at no. 22.
  • In 1988, Hong Kong artist Rosanne Lui covered the song under the proper name "一厢情愿" (lit. wishful thinking) which was featured in her album "文明浪族" (English: Modernistic Cult). [86]
